Bordeaux Wine Country: Médoc, Saint-Émilion & Sauternes

Immerse yourself in the world's most famous wine region—drive the Médoc Route des Châteaux, explore the UNESCO hilltop village of Saint-Émilion, discover Sauternes sweet wine country, and learn to taste like a sommelier at the Bordeaux Wine School.

  1. 1

Médoc Wine Route – Margaux & Pauillac

The Médoc peninsula north of Bordeaux produces the world's most celebrated red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon. Drive the D2 'Route des Châteaux' past the grand estates of Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe—home to first growths Château Latour, Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, and Château Margaux.

  2. 2

    Saint-Émilion – UNESCO Wine Village

The medieval hilltop village of Saint-Émilion, 40 km east of Bordeaux, is both a wine appellation and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Merlot-dominant wines from châteaux like Pétrus, Cheval Blanc, and Ausone are among the world's most sought-after. The village's 12th-century monolithic church is carved entirely from limestone bedrock.

  3. 3

    Pomerol & Right Bank Appellations

Adjacent to Saint-Émilion, tiny Pomerol produces some of Bordeaux's most expensive wines despite having no classification system. Château Pétrus—whose wine fetches thousands per bottle—sits on a unique plateau of blue clay. The surrounding villages of Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac offer excellent value alternatives.

  4. 4

Sauternes & Barsac Sweet Wine Country

South of the city, the Sauternes appellation produces legendary sweet wines from botrytis-affected Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Château d'Yquem—the only premier cru supérieur—makes arguably the world's greatest dessert wine. Visit during October harvest when the selective grape-picking at extreme labour costs is underway.

  5. 5

    École du Vin de Bordeaux

The Bordeaux Wine School in the city centre offers tasting workshops and masterclasses in English for all levels—from 90-minute introductions to all-day immersions with certified sommeliers. Located in the Maison du Vin de Bordeaux building near Place de la Bourse, it's the perfect starting point before vineyard visits.

  6. 6

Bar à Vin & Wine Bars in Bordeaux

Bordeaux's city-centre wine bar scene is thriving: the CIVB's Bar à Vin near the tourist office pours 20 wines by the glass at accessible prices. Darwin Ecosystème, a converted military barracks, houses wine bars alongside street art and urban gardens. L'Appart and Aux Quatre Coins du Vin offer natural and organic Bordeaux selections.
