Crystal Castle & Hinterland Meditation Walk

Drive into the Byron hinterland to Crystal Castle — a unique gardens and crystal centre near Mullumbimby — then walk through macadamia orchards and rainforest remnants in the volcanic landscape.

  1. 1

    Crystal Castle Gardens

Crystal Castle is unlike any other attraction in Australia — a garden of giant crystal formations, peace pagodas, and meditation spaces set in subtropical rainforest above the Brunswick Valley.

  2. 2

    World Peace Stupa

The Nipponzan Myohoji World Peace Stupa at Crystal Castle is one of only two in Australia — the white dome rises above the rainforest canopy and is a genuine place of Buddhist pilgrimage and meditation.

  3. 3

    Macadamia Orchard Walk

The Byron hinterland is the original home of the macadamia nut — orchards of the native tree cover the volcanic hillsides, and several farms offer tastings of fresh-roasted nuts and macadamia-derived products.

  4. 4

    Brunswick Heads Estuary

Brunswick Heads is a small fishing village at the mouth of the Brunswick River — the estuary is a productive habitat for mullet, bream, and the pelicans and sea eagles that follow the fish upriver.

  5. 5

    Rainforest Remnant Track

Remnant subtropical rainforest patches on the volcanic hillsides above Mullumbimby are accessible by farm tracks — the giant strangler figs and piccabeen palms in these patches are relicts of the forest that covered the region.

  6. 6

    Brunswick Valley View

A hilltop view across the Brunswick Valley shows the distinctive volcanic landscape of the Byron hinterland — the dome of Mount Warning rises to the northwest, the original central volcano of the ancient Tweed Shield.
