Quebrada del Condorito: Tracking the Andean Condor
The Quebrada del Condorito national park in the Córdoba Sierras — 2 hours from Córdoba city — is the most accessible place in Argentina to see Andean condors soaring at close range; the dramatic gorge and the condors nesting on the rock faces make it one of Argentina's finest wildlife destinations
- 1
Condor Colony
Quebrada del Condorito has a permanent breeding colony of Andean condors - about 80-100 birds - which nest in the cliffs of the gorge; the condors can be observed up close from the vantage points above the quebrada; the morning thermals (from 09:00 to 12:00) is the best time to see the birds soar effortlessly on their 3 meter wingspan
- 2
Hike to the viewpoint
The regular Condorito hike (4-5 hours round trip) follows the pampa de achala plateau through low vegetation to the quebrada rim; the trek is moderate in difficulty and the open landscape of the plateau (with its own wildlife - pumas, foxes and vizcachas) is rewarding even before the condor views; good boots and sun protection are essential
- 3
Pampa de Achala
Pampa de Achala — the high plateau (2,200-2,700 m) at the top of the Córdoba Sierras — is a unique ecosystem of low vegetation, rock outcrops, and clear streams that feed both the Paraná and Río de la Plata drainage systems; the plateau's open sky, clean mountain air and silence make it one of Argentina's most beautiful landscapes

Cougar Population
The Quebrada del Condorito National Park has a healthy puma population — pumas prey on the guanacos and vizcachas of the pampa de achala; Cougar sightings are rare but possible, especially at dawn and dusk; the park's wildlife management has maintained the cougar population despite its proximity to the much-visited Córdoba Sierras

Condor Recovery
The Andean condor—listed as vulnerable—has recovered significantly in the Córdoba Sierras through conservation programs; the condor is the symbol of the Argentine provinces of Córdoba and Mendoza; the annual condor count (which includes counting breeding pairs in the quebrada) is a key indicator of population health

Camping and stargazing
Camping is permitted in designated areas in Quebrada del Condorito Park; the combination of the park's high altitude, its distance from city light pollution and the clear Sierra skies make the park one of Argentina's finest stargazing spots; the night sky over the Pampa de Achala – with the Milky Way clearly visible – is extraordinary
