Merzouga Circuit: The Tafilalet Grand Circuit, the Erfoud Fossil Route, the Rissani Heritage Trail, the Ziz Valley Connection, and the Southern Morocco Desert Road

The Merzouga circuit route covers the Tafilalet Grand Circuit from Merzouga north through Rissani and Erfoud to Midelt and the Ziz Valley, the Erfoud fossil route, the Rissani heritage trail through the Alaouite ancestral sites, the Ziz Valley gorge, and the connections south to the Algerian border.

  1. 1

Tafilalet Grand Circuit: The Desert Road Loop

The Tafilalet Grand Circuit from Merzouga north to Rissani (22km), Erfoud (54km), the Ziz Valley south section, the Tinejdad oasis (150km from Merzouga), and the return south through the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate is the most geographically expansive single pre-Saharan Morocco road circuit and the loop that most completely conveys the Tafilalet oasis geography (the largest single oasis in Morocco) with the date palm groves, the ksar villages, the fossil beds, and the Ziz River gorge in the most logistically practical single pre-Saharan circuit. The Tafilalet Grand Circuit requires 3-4 days minimum for the most content-rich single experience.

  2. 2

Ziz Valley Gorge: The Canyon Approach to the Desert

The Ziz Valley gorge, the most dramatically narrow single Moroccan pre-Saharan gorge where the Ziz River cuts through the Jurassic limestone plateau in a 30-kilometer canyon (the most photogenically complete single Moroccan desert canyon) with the palm oasis on the gorge floor and the vertical red limestone walls on each side, is the most spectacular single approach to the Tafilalet oasis from the north and the gorge most directly comparable to the American Colorado River canyon in its scale and its color character. The Ziz gorge road from Er-Rachidia to Erfoud is the most scenically productive single Moroccan pre-Saharan road journey.

  3. 3

Merzouga South: The Algerian Border Dunes

The Merzouga dune field extends south toward the Algerian border (the most politically sensitive single Moroccan geographic boundary at the Erg Chebbi southern tip, 3 kilometers from the border fence) and the cross-border dune system is the most visually seamless single international border in North Africa because the sand dune makes the most complete single natural boundary marker that ignores the political line. The southern Erg Chebbi sections beyond the standard tourist zone are the most pristine single Erg Chebbi dune areas and the most reliably undisturbed single Moroccan desert landscape accessible from the Merzouga base.

  4. 4

    Tinejdad: The Todra-Draa Junction

Tinejdad, 150 kilometers northwest of Merzouga at the junction of the Todra Valley road and the Tafilalet circuit, is the most practically important single road junction in the Draa-Tafilalet region and the town that most efficiently connects the Erg Chebbi desert with the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley without returning to Ouarzazate. The Tinejdad oasis (the Todra River oasis before the river enters the Todra Gorge) and the Amellago canyon (the most dramatically colored single pre-Atlas canyon visible from the Tinejdad road) make it the most scenically rewarding single junction town in the Draa-Tafilalet circuit.

  5. 5

Midelt: The Middle Atlas High Town

Midelt, 150 kilometers north of Erfoud at 1500 meters altitude in the Middle Atlas foothills between the High Atlas and the Middle Atlas, is the most dramatically positioned single Moroccan road junction town at the most visually striking single pass between the Atlas mountain systems and the most photogenically positioned single Moroccan town with the Jbel Ayachi (3747 meters, the highest single Middle Atlas summit) rising behind the town. The Midelt apple orchards (the most commercially significant single Middle Atlas apple production, made possible by the altitude and the Moulouya River irrigation) and the Carpet Maison Berbere (the most extensive single carpet workshop in the Midelt region) are the most recommended single Midelt visitor stops.

    Merzouga Departure: The Desert Summary

Merzouga is the most definitively Saharan single Moroccan travel experience and the destination that most completely fulfills the traveler who has come to Morocco specifically for the desert: the 150-meter orange dunes, the camel trek to the camp, the most starry single sky in Morocco, the fennec fox tracks in the morning sand, the Gnawa music around the fire, and the desert sunrise from the dune crest. The visitor who leaves Merzouga carrying the most personally meaningful single Moroccan experience - the combination of the most dramatic single natural landscape and the most ancient single nomadic culture and the most complete single night sky - carries the most emotionally resonant single Moroccan memory.
