South Bay & Esplanade Circular Walk

Walk the circular route from Kaikōura township through South Bay, past the fishing boat harbour, and back along the esplanade — a complete coastal circuit with mountain views and marine wildlife.

  1. 1

    Kaikōura Town Square

The small town square is Kaikōura's social centre — cafés, the i-SITE visitor centre, and the daily gathering of tourists preparing for whale watch or dolphin swim departures.

  2. 2

    South Bay Harbour

South Bay is the working fishing harbour — crayfish pots are stacked on the wharf, and the small fleet of crayfishing boats tie up here after early-morning pot checks along the coast.

  3. 3

    Fishing Industry Heritage

Plaques along the wharf tell the story of Kaikōura's fishing industry — from the near-extinction of crayfish through overfishing in the 1970s to the sustainable management that restored stocks.

  4. 4

    South Bay Beach

South Bay Beach is a sheltered cove away from the main tourist area — local families use this beach, and fur seals sometimes haul out on the rocks at the bay's southern end.

  5. 5

    Esplanade Promenade

The esplanade path follows the rocky coastline from South Bay back toward the peninsula — every step reveals a different composition of mountains, sea, and rock shelf stretching to the horizon.

  6. 6

    Marine Parade Return

Marine Parade runs back to the town centre along the sea edge — the late afternoon light on the mountains from this walkway is a reliable daily reward for those who time the circuit correctly.
