Koh Lanta Departure
Koh Lanta, the large island south of Krabi accessible by ferry from the Krabi mainland, is the most fully developed alternative island destination to the Phi Phi group in the Krabi province area — the island's 27km western coastline of contiguous beaches (Klong Dao, Pra Ae Long Beach, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay) provides a range of beach resort environments from the family resort to the boutique dive hotel, and the island's more relaxed atmosphere and longer coastline distribute the tourist pressure more effectively than the concentrated venues of Phi Phi and Railay. The national park at the island's southern tip (Mu Ko Lanta National Park) protects the island's best reef and the pristine beaches at the forest edge.

Koh Ngai Island Snorkel
Koh Ngai in the Trang island group, accessible from Krabi by the four islands day trip or directly from the Trang mainland, has the best coral reef accessible from the Krabi day-trip circuit — the reef fringing the island's eastern shore has substantially better coverage and fish diversity than the reefs within the busy Phi Phi and Railay areas, with the visibility in the clear Trang water typically 15-20 metres and the coral formations supporting the full range of Andaman reef species. Koh Rok (two islands, Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai) in the southern Krabi province area is the most pristine reef environment accessible from the Krabi day-trip base (a 1.5-hour speedboat journey) — the protected marine national park waters around Koh Rok have the highest coral coverage and fish biomass accessible from the province, with the reef monitoring data consistently showing the Koh Rok reef as one of the healthiest in the Thai Andaman. Koh Poda Picnic Beach
Koh Poda off the Ao Nang coast is the nearest accessible island with a sandy beach on the standard four islands circuit from Krabi — the island's white sand beach backed by casuarina trees and fronted by clear turquoise water with good snorkeling on the southern reef provides the standard tropical island picnic lunch experience that is the core product of the Krabi day-trip market. The island's proximity to Ao Nang (20 minutes by longtail) makes it the most frequently visited island in the Krabi area and the most reliably included in any island tour package.

Chicken Island Rock Formation
Koh Kai (Chicken Island), named for the chicken-head shaped limestone rock rising from the sea at the island's end, is one of the more memorable geological curiosities on the Krabi four islands circuit — the offshore rock with its distinctive profile is the most photographed geological formation in the Krabi area and provides the visual centrepiece of the tour boats' photo stop. The snorkeling at Chicken Island's eastern reef has good fish diversity in the shallow water around the rocky base of the karst formation, and the visual combination of the snorkeling encounter and the photographic subject of the rock formation makes the stop the most popular single point on the four islands tour.

Sunset at Ao Nang
The sunset at Ao Nang beach, with the offshore karst islands silhouetted against the Andaman sunset, creates one of the most photographed coastal panoramas in southern Thailand — the combination of the active boat traffic (the longtail boats returning from Railay, the day-trip speedboats returning from the islands, and the fishing fleet heading out for the evening) and the dramatic geological backdrop of the offshore limestone creates a sunset scene with more compositional elements than the typical beach sunset.
