Medan Food Capital of Sumatra Walk

Eat through Medan — widely regarded as the best food city in Sumatra, Medan's cuisine combines Batak, Minang, Malay, Chinese, and Indian food traditions in a culinary landscape that has produced some of Indonesia's most celebrated dishes, from bika ambon cake to the various noodle soups that claim Medan as their origin.

  1. 1

    Bika Ambon Jalan Mojopahit

Jalan Mojopahit in Medan is famous throughout Indonesia as the bika ambon production centre — the honeycomb-textured, pandan-scented cake that despite its name ('Ambon sponge cake') is actually a Medan specialty, with the dozens of shops along this street selling freshly baked bika ambon in various flavours (original pandan, durian, cheese) to the Medan residents who buy it as gifts for relatives in other cities. The cake is sold warm from the oven and is best consumed within 24 hours.

  2. 2

    Warung Soto Medan

Soto Medan is the North Sumatran variant of Indonesia's national soup — the creamy, coconut milk-enriched broth with turmeric, lemongrass, and galangal, containing shredded chicken or beef, vermicelli, and boiled egg, represents the Malay and Batak culinary fusion that characterises Medan's cooking. The richness of the coconut milk broth distinguishes it from the lighter Javanese soto and the dry spice-based soto of Makassar, and the dish is served from early morning as Medan's most popular breakfast option.

  3. 3

    Mie Aceh Noodle Restaurant

Mie Aceh, the spicy noodle dish from the province north of Medan, is one of the most popular dishes in Medan's food scene — the thick yellow noodles cooked in a richly spiced curry-like sauce with beef, seafood, or crab, served with acar (pickled vegetables) and emping crackers, demonstrates the influence of Acehnese cuisine on Medan's food culture. The proximity of Aceh and the large Acehnese community in Medan has made this dish part of the city's own culinary identity rather than a regional import.

  4. 4

    Taman Selecta Night Food Market

The night food markets of Medan operate from dusk until the early hours, serving the city's characteristic evening dining culture — the grilled seafood, the various satay preparations (chicken, goat, padang spiced), the martabak (stuffed savoury pancake) vendors, and the dessert stalls selling durian ice cream and es campur create the most diverse night food environment in Sumatra, reflecting Medan's position as the culinary capital of a province where food is taken very seriously.

  5. 5

    Durian Ucok Durian Stall

Durian Ucok on Jalan Wahid Hasyim is Medan's most famous durian stall — the shop that has been selling the finest durian from the North Sumatra highlands since 1968 is the destination for both Medan residents and visitors specifically seeking the premium Medan durian varieties like Monthong, D24, and the local Deli durian. North Sumatra produces some of Indonesia's finest durian, and Durian Ucok's reputation for quality selection and the knowledge of their staff about durian varieties has made it a pilgrimage site for serious durian enthusiasts from across Indonesia.

  6. 6

    Pagaruyung Minang Cuisine

Medan's large Minangkabau community from West Sumatra has established a thriving padang restaurant culture in the city — the West Sumatran cuisine with its rich coconut milk curries, rendang beef, gulai chicken, and the extraordinary variety of side dishes displayed at the counter of the padang restaurant represents one of the world's great culinary traditions, and Medan's padang restaurants maintain the highest standards of this cuisine outside Padang itself, serving the Minang community that has spread commercially across Indonesia.
