Monaco Deep Dive: Palace History, Gardens & Night Views

Go beyond Monaco's surface glamour—tour the Grimaldi palace's 18th-century state rooms, trace 726 years of the world's oldest ruling dynasty, find peace in the Japanese garden, admire Grace Kelly's Rolls-Royce in the vintage car museum, and see the principality at its most magical after dark.

    Palais Princier Interior Tours

From June to October, the state apartments of the Palais Princier are open to the public. Guided tours of 30 rooms show the Throne Room with its 18th-century frescoes, the Gallery of Mirrors, the York Chamber where the Duke of York died in 1767, and an exceptional collection of Sèvres porcelain and Flemish tapestries accumulated over seven centuries of Grimaldi rule.

Musée du Palais & Grimaldi Dynasty History

The Grimaldi family's 726-year hold on Monaco—the world's oldest ruling dynasty in continuous possession of the same territory—is traced in the palace museum's collection of portraits, armour, and royal documents. François Grimaldi first seized the rock in 1297 disguised as a Franciscan monk—hence the two monks holding swords on the Monégasque coat of arms.

  3. 3

    Japanese Garden & Landscape Architecture

The Jardin Japonais on the Larvotto seafront was designed by Yasuo Beppu in 1994 according to Shinto principles—incorporating a tea house, waterfall, stream, and raked gravel garden. At 7,000 m², it is among the largest Japanese gardens in Europe outside Japan. Entry is free; it opens daily and offers a meditative counterpoint to Monaco's surrounding glamour.

  4. 4

Collection de Voitures Anciennes – Vintage Car Museum

Prince Rainier III's personal collection of 100 historic vehicles, displayed in Fontvieille, spans a 1903 De Dion-Bouton to 1980s Formula 1 cars. Highlights include the 1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud used by Grace Kelly, racing cars driven by Fangio and Senna at Monaco, and rare carriages from the pre-automobile era of the Grimaldi court.

  5. 5

Nouveau Musée National de Monaco – NMNM

Monaco's national museum of modern art operates across two Belle Époque villas: Villa Paloma and Villa Sauber. NMNM focuses on the relationship between art and performance, housing a historic collection of theatrical automata and dolls alongside contemporary exhibitions. The Villa Sauber sits in a rose garden directly above the Larvotto beach.

Monaco at Night – Illuminated Harbour Views

Monaco after dark is spectacular: the Casino's floodlit facade reflects in the polished square; Port Hercule's superyachts glow with interior lighting; the Rock of Monaco is illuminated against the dark Mediterranean sky. The best free viewpoint is from the Tête de Chien above La Turbie—a 20-minute drive—where the entire principality appears as a constellation of lights below.
