The Most Romantic Evening in Paris: Sunset to Light Show

Paris earns its 'City of Love' reputation most thoroughly at dusk and after dark, when the monuments glow amber, the Seine reflects the lights and the streets empty out. This evening route (start 5pm, finish around midnight) strings together the city's most romantically charged locations in sequence—each building on the last—culminating in the Eiffel Tower's famous hourly light show and a final walk across Pont Alexandre III.

  1. 1

    Pont des Arts at Sunset

Begin on the Pont des Arts (the pedestrian footbridge connecting the Louvre to the Institut de France). This was the original 'love lock bridge' before the locks were removed in 2015 (the weight had become dangerous). At sunset, the western sky turns amber and gold, with the Pont Neuf and Île de la Cité visible upstream and the Louvre and the gilded dome of the Invalides visible on the banks. Allow 20-30 minutes here—it's unhurried and beautiful at this hour.

  2. 2

Île Saint-Louis & Berthillon Ice Cream

Walk east along the Left Bank and cross to Île Saint-Louis—the smaller of the two Seine islands. This island was never built up with grand monuments; instead it's an intact 17th-century neighbourhood of private hotels, antique shops and restaurants. Stop at Berthillon (31 Rue Saint-Louis en l'Île)—Paris's most famous ice cream maker since 1954. Order a scoop of cassis (blackcurrant) or nougat au miel and eat it while walking the island perimeter along the quai.

  3. 3

Dinner in the Marais — Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine

Cross to the Right Bank and walk into the Marais neighbourhood. Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine is one of Paris's most atmospheric small squares—a hidden courtyard ringed by restaurants with outdoor tables, entirely car-free and lit by street lanterns in the evening. It's frequented almost exclusively by Parisians and regulars. Choose any of the terrasse restaurants and order a traditional French dinner: foie gras to start, a slow-cooked veal or lamb main, cheese, and a bottle of Burgundy.

  4. 4

    Place des Vosges by Night

A three-minute walk from dinner brings you to Place des Vosges—Paris's oldest square (1612)—which transforms completely at night. The ground-floor arcades glow with warm light from the galleries and restaurants beneath them, the central garden is locked but beautifully lit from outside, and the harmony of the 36 identical brick pavilions is more striking in the dark than in daylight. In summer, musicians sometimes perform under the arcades. Stand in the centre of the square and turn slowly—it's one of the most beautiful man-made spaces in the world.

  5. 5

    Eiffel Tower Light Show

Take a taxi or metro west to the Champ de Mars. Position yourself on the grass with a clear view of the tower. Every hour on the hour after dark (until 1am), the Eiffel Tower's 20,000 gold bulbs switch to a rapid-fire sparkling display that lasts exactly 5 minutes. This was added in 1985 for the tower's centenary and has remained ever since. Watching it from the grass of the Champ de Mars—ideally with a bottle of wine, bought from any nearby épicerie—is one of the most quintessentially Parisian experiences possible. Note: photographing the sparkling display is technically subject to copyright (the light designer holds it), but this is rarely enforced for personal use.

  6. 6

Pont Alexandre III — The Grand Finale

Walk or taxi ten minutes north to Pont Alexandre III, the most ornate bridge in Paris. Built for the 1900 World's Fair, it's decorated with gilded bronze sculptures, Art Nouveau lamp posts and four golden pegasus statues at the corners. At night, with the Invalides dome lit golden behind it and the Grand Palais glowing across the river, the bridge is spectacular. Walk across it slowly. The Seine below reflects everything. This is the perfect final image of a Paris evening.
