Nukha Historical Neighborhoods Heritage Walk

Explore Sheki's historical neighborhoods under its former name Nukha, where the traditional residential architecture of wooden-balconied houses, neighborhood mosques, and the layered urban fabric of a Silk Road city have been preserved in the old quarters below the fortress.

  1. 1

    Yuxari Bash Upper Quarter

Begin in the Yuxari Bash upper quarter of old Nukha/Sheki where the traditional houses of the prosperous silk merchant class display the finest examples of Sheki residential architecture — elaborate wooden balconies, carved decorative elements, and gardens hidden behind high walls.

  2. 2

    Aşağı Baş Lower Quarter

Descend to the lower quarter where the architecture becomes more modest but no less characteristic, the smaller houses of ordinary townspeople showing the same basic Sheki building tradition of stone lower floors and wooden upper stories with projecting balconies.

  3. 3

    Neighborhood Mosque

Visit one of the neighborhood mosques where the Islamic religious architecture of Sheki reflects the Sunni Muslim tradition of the local population, distinct from the Shia mosques of southern Azerbaijan and expressing the regional religious identity of this mountain city.

  4. 4

    Traditional Fountain

Find one of the traditional carved stone fountains that once provided water to the neighborhood, the public water infrastructure of old Nukha representing the urban engineering of a prosperous Silk Road city that managed the mountain springs flowing through the town.

  5. 5

    Merchant House Interior

If access is arranged, enter one of the restored merchant houses to see the interior organization of a prosperous Sheki home — the division between public reception rooms and private family quarters, the elaborate wooden ceiling decorations, and the storage spaces for silk and other traded goods.

  6. 6

    Evening Street Walk

Walk the old quarter streets in the evening when the light softens and locals emerge for the traditional evening promenade, the atmosphere of a city that has retained its unhurried Caucasian character despite tourism development making Sheki one of Azerbaijan's most visited historic towns.
