Sofia Practical Guide: Metro, Budget Tips & Getting Around
Make the most of Sofia—Europe's most affordable capital. Arrive by cheap Wizz Air flight or overnight Balkan train, zip around on the €0.70 metro, eat well for €8, find independent coffee shops and vinyl bars in Strelbishte, and use Sofia as a base for the cheapest ski resorts in Europe at Bansko.

Sofia Central Station & Arriving by Rail
Sofia Central Station connects Bulgaria to Belgrade (8 hrs), Bucharest (9 hrs), Istanbul (11 hrs), and Athens (12 hrs) by overnight train—one of the great Balkan rail corridors. Domestic trains to Plovdiv (2.5 hrs), Varna on the Black Sea (7 hrs), and Rila (connection at Dupnitsa) are slower than buses but scenic. The station is 10 minutes by metro from the city centre.

Sofia Metro & Public Transport
Sofia's metro system—opened in 1998 and now covering 3 lines—is clean, frequent, and very cheap (€0.70 per journey). Line 2 connects the airport to the city centre in 25 minutes. Trams and buses supplement the metro; the Vitosha tram (line 9) runs south from the centre to the mountain's base. A 10-trip card offers the best value for multi-day visitors.

Budget Sofia – Europe's Most Affordable Capital
Sofia consistently ranks as western Europe and the Balkans' most affordable capital city for visitors. A full restaurant meal costs €5–12; a craft beer costs €2; a hotel double room starts at €25. The free walking tour, free museum entry on the first Sunday of each month, and free outdoor thermal fountain water all add to the proposition. Budget travellers can live extremely well here for €40–50/day total.

Boho Sofia – Strelbishte & Graf Ignatiev
The Strelbishte neighbourhood south of Vitosha Boulevard and the streets around Graf Ignatiev represent Sofia's creative and bohemian heart—independent bookshops, vinyl record stores, natural wine bars, craft coffee roasters, and vintage clothing shops occupy the ground floors of communist-era apartment blocks. The contrast between the brutalist architecture and the creative energy within is distinctively Sofia.

Sofia Airport & Low-Cost Flight Links
Sofia Airport (SOF), 10 km from the centre, has become a major hub for Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet with direct routes to most European capitals and many secondary cities. Flight prices to Sofia are often among the cheapest in Europe, particularly from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands—making it an accessible weekend destination that remains underrated relative to its quality.

Best Seasons & Practical Tips
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal: comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Summers are hot (35°C) but with cool mountain escape on Vitosha. Winters are cold but Sofia's ski resorts at Borovets and Bansko (150 km away) are excellent and a fraction of Alpine prices. The Euro has not replaced the Bulgarian Lev (BGN)—exchange at banks or ATMs, not exchange bureaux in tourist areas.
