Foz do Douro, Costa Atlantica e il Quartiere Oceano di Porto

Foz do Douro (the 'Mouth of the Douro' — the western end of Porto where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean, the affluent seaside residential neighbourhood with the Passeio Alegre garden, the Atlantic promenade, the outdoor café culture of the Avenida do Brasil, and the views of the Atlantic and the lighthouse) is Porto's most elegant neighbourhood and the gateway to the Porto Atlantic beach culture.

Foz do Douro — Where the River Meets the Atlantic

Foz do Douro (the mouth of the Douro River, the western extremity of Porto, accessible from the city centre by Tram 1 — the historic yellow tram running along the Douro riverbank, a 45-minute ride) is Porto's most upscale residential neighbourhood — the Atlantic Ocean beaches (Praia de Matosinhos, 4km north of Foz, accessible by Metro line B, the most popular urban beach in Porto) and the Coa fortress ruins (the original mouth-of-Douro fortifications) are the architectural anchors; the beach culture begins in June and runs through September.

Castelo do Queijo — The Cheese Castle on the Rock

Castelo do Queijo (Castle of Cheese, Praça Gonçalves Zarco, Foz, the small 17th-century coastal fortification built on a rounded rock formation resembling a cheese wheel) guards the mouth of the Douro — the castle (free exterior, interior by occasional guided tour) is surrounded by one of the finest stretches of Atlantic seafront promenade in Portugal (the Passeio Alegre, the formal garden area adjacent, and the stretch of promenade north to Matosinhos passing the tidal swimming pools at Piscinas do Molhe); the sunset from the castle seawall is Porto's best.

  3. 3

Matosinhos Seafood — The Fresh Fish Capital of Portugal

Matosinhos (immediate north of Foz do Douro, accessible by Metro Line B, the fishing port that supplies Porto with the day's catch) is Portugal's most important fishing port for Atlantic species — the grilled fish restaurants on Rua Heróis de França (the 'Fish Street', open daily from 12:30pm until the fish runs out, often by 3pm) serve the morning's catch (grilled dorada, sea bass, cherne/grouper, and linguado/sole) for €12–18 per person; the Tuesday and Saturday fish market (Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos) is the largest open-air fish market in the north of Portugal.

  4. 4

Porto's Atlantic Surf — Matosinhos and Espinho

Matosinhos Beach (the urban beach adjacent to the fishing port) has consistent Atlantic swell (0.5–2m normally, larger in winter) suitable for beginner surfing — surf schools operate from the beach (€30/2-hour lesson including board); the more powerful waves at Espinho (20km south of Porto, accessible by commuter rail) attract intermediate and advanced surfers; the legendary Praia de Moledo (Viana do Castelo, 60km north) has one of the longest beach breaks in Portugal; the Porto surf season is year-round, with October–March offering the most consistent swells.

Serralves Museum — Contemporary Art in a Park

Fundação de Serralves (Rua D. João de Castro 210, Boavista, 20 minutes from Foz by taxi, €20 adults, daily 10am–7pm) is Portugal's principal contemporary art museum — the building (1999, Álvaro Siza Vieira, Portugal's only Pritzker Prize architect, his most celebrated building in his home city) and the 18-hectare Art Deco park (Serralves estate, 1930s) are co-equal attractions; the Serralves Foundation's rotating exhibitions (international contemporary art, 3–4 major shows per year) have featured Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, and Kara Walker.

    Tram 1 — Porto's Historic Coastal Tram

Tram 1 (the yellow vintage tram, route from Infante to Passeio Alegre, Foz, 45 minutes, €3.50 single, operates by STCP Porto, cars date from 1895 to 1927) is Porto's most memorable transport experience — the route runs along the Douro riverbank from the historic centre (departing near the Palácio da Bolsa) past the wine lodge riverside terraces, under the Arrábida bridge, and out to the Foz beaches; the cars are authentically worn (original wooden interiors, manual doors, the motorman calling stations); tourists far outnumber locals on the route.
