Vila Nova de Gaia, Cantine di Porto e Degustazioni
Vila Nova de Gaia (the city on the south bank of the Douro, directly opposite Porto — the home of all the major Port wine lodges, where the Port wine from the Douro Valley has been aged and shipped since the 17th century) is the essential complement to the Porto Ribeira experience, accessible via the Dom Luís I Bridge on foot or by the Porto Metro (Linha D).

Port Wine Lodges — 60 Lodges Across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia (the municipality south of the Douro River, accessible from Porto by the Ponte de Dom Luís I bridge, a 10-minute walk from Porto city centre) houses 60+ port wine lodges (armazéns) where port wine has been matured in wooden casks since the 17th century — the lodges are carved into the hillside to maintain a constant temperature (15–17°C); Taylor's Fladgate (1692, the oldest port house still actively producing wine), Graham's, Sandeman, Ramos Pinto, and Ferreira are the most visitor-friendly; cellar tours €5–15, tastings €3–15 per wine.

Sandeman Lodge — The Most Visited Port Wine Cellar
Sandeman (founded 1790, Largo Miguel Bombarda, Vila Nova de Gaia, the most visited port wine cellar in Portugal, 300,000+ visitors/year) is known for its 'Don' logo (the black-cloaked Portuguese student figure, created 1928, one of the first registered trademark figures in the wine world) — the standard tour (€13.50, 45 minutes) covers the history of the Sandeman family, the port wine production process, and a tasting of 2 ports; the Premium Tour (€20, 75 minutes) includes a 20-year Tawny; the terrace bar overlooks the Douro.

World of Wine (WOW) — The New Cultural District
World of Wine (WOW, Rua do Choupelo 39, Vila Nova de Gaia, 2020, the former Ramos Pinto warehouse complex converted to a cultural destination) has 8 museums and 12 restaurants/bars in a 20,000m² waterfront complex — the Pink Palace (rosé wine culture), Planet Cork (cork industry), Fashion and Fabric, the Bridge (the story of the connection between Porto and Gaia), and the Wine Experience are the principal museums (combined ticket €24); the rooftop terrace bar (free access) is the best vantage point for the Ribeira skyline photograph.

Gaia Riverside Cable Car — 581m Over the Douro
The Gaia cable car (Teleférico de Gaia, upper station at the Jardim do Morro near the top of Luís I bridge, lower station at the Cais de Gaia riverside, 581m, 5 minutes, €6 one-way, €9 return) offers the best aerial view of Porto's Ribeira district and the Luís I bridge — the car passes directly alongside the upper deck of the bridge (at the same height) before descending to the riverside; the lower cable car station is surrounded by the outdoor terraces of the riverside restaurants serving bacalhau à Gaia and seafood.

Offley and Taylor's — The Port Wine Heritage Experience
Taylor Fladgate (Rua do Choupelo 250, founded 1692, consistently ranked the leading quality port producer) is the most serious port wine cellar tour in Gaia — the Premium Tour (€25, 90 minutes) covers the lodge's archive (bottles dating to 1863, the Taylor's vintage collection), the aging warehouses (the smell of port maturing in 600-litre balseiros — large casks — is overwhelming), and a tasting of 3 ports including the 20-year Tawny; Taylor's terrace restaurant (The Yeatman Hotel adjacent) offers the most sophisticated lunch in Gaia.

Cálem Lodge — Fado and Port Wine
Cálem (Avenida Diogo Leite 344, Vila Nova de Gaia, founded 1859, the only port wine cellar that combines cellar tours with live Fado music) hosts evening 'Fado at Cálem' sessions (€29, 45-minute cellar tour + 45-minute Fado performance + port wine tasting) — the Fado performances (6:30pm and 7pm daily) in the cellar's barrel room create an unusual acoustic environment; the combination of Porto's two defining cultural exports (port wine and Fado — though Fado is primarily associated with Lisbon, it has a distinct Porto style) makes this the most condensed Porto cultural experience.
