Quartiere di Gros, Spiaggia di Zurriola e la Scena Surf di San Sebastián

The Gros neighbourhood (the young, bohemian district east of the Río Urumea — the most vibrant and the least touristy neighbourhood in San Sebastián, with the highest concentration of independent cafés, pintxos bars, and alternative culture venues) and the Zurriola beach (the surf beach facing the Atlantic swell) together constitute San Sebastián's alternative, local face — the antithesis of the Belle Époque elegance of La Concha.

Zurriola Beach — The Surfing Beach of San Sebastián

Zurriola Beach (400m, the beach on the east side of the Urumea River, adjacent to the Kursaal Congress Centre, facing the open Bay of Biscay without the protection of La Concha's natural bay) receives the strongest Atlantic swell in San Sebastián — the consistent waves (0.5–1.5m standard, up to 3m in winter) make it the city's principal surfing beach; the Pukas Surf School (the most established surf school in the Basque Country, founded 1985 by brothers who pioneered Basque surfing) operates from the beach; board rental €20/day, lessons €45 for 2-hour group session.

Gros Neighbourhood — San Sebastián's Surf Village

Gros (the neighbourhood east of the Urumea River, developed 1880–1930 as the working-class extension of the old town) is San Sebastián's surf neighbourhood — the main street (Calle Zemoria) is lined with surf shops (Pukas, Quiksilver, the local shops), vegetarian cafes, and the bars where surfers eat after morning sessions; the neighbourhood has the highest concentration of pintxos bars after the Old Town (Calle San Francisco and Calle Peña y Goñi are the best streets); the Zurriola beach esplanade is the social centre from June to October.

Kursaal Congress Centre — Two Cubes of Light on the River

The Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium (Avenida de la Zurriola 1, Rafael Moneo architect, 1999, the first project to bring Moneo — Spain's only Pritzker Prize winner — to his home region of Navarra/Basque Country) consists of two glass-and-concrete translucent cubes at the mouth of the Urumea River — the building (1,800-seat main auditorium, 600-seat chamber hall) hosts the San Sebastián International Film Festival (September, the 4th most important film festival in Europe after Venice, Cannes, and Berlin, 230 films from 40 countries, 130,000+ attendees) which was established in 1953.

  4. 4

San Sebastián International Film Festival — Star Sightings in Basque Country

The Zinemaldia (Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, September, 9 days) brings an unusually high concentration of international film talent to a small city — the Donostia Award (the festival's highest honour, awarded to individuals for their film career) has been presented to Bette Davis (1989), Gregory Peck (1999), Susan Sarandon (2013), Meryl Streep (2016), and Cate Blanchett (2020); the red carpet ceremonies at the Kursaal and the Old Town impromptu meetings with directors and actors in pintxos bars are the distinctive festival experience.

Basque Surfing History — From Mundaka to San Sebastián

The Basque Country surf culture began in the 1960s when Basque fishermen returning from Newfoundland brought the first surfboards to the region — Mundaka (45km west of San Sebastián, the most famous river-mouth wave in Europe, a perfect left-hand barrel reaching 500m, considered a world-class big wave location when a 3m+ swell hits from the north) is the epicenter of serious Basque surfing; the Billabong Pro Mundaka (World Surf League event) was held at Mundaka for 15 consecutive years; Pukas Surf Camp (San Sebastián) runs weekly surf and pintxos combinations.

San Sebastián Food Festival — Gastronomika

Gastronomika (San Sebastián Gastronomika, the annual international gastronomy congress, November, the Congress Palace Kursaal) is the most important professional cooking congress in Spain — 150 chefs from 30+ countries present technical innovations, cultural food presentations, and debates; the Euskal Herria Gastronomika (the public-facing companion event) allows non-industry visitors to attend demonstrations, taste menus, and buy artisan products; the congress coincides with the autumn mushroom season and the first new vintage Rioja Alavesa wines.
