Brașov: Hiking, Photography & the Magical Christmas Market

Complete your Brașov experience—walk the medieval bastion walls, hike the Carpathian ridge above the city, find the best photography spots at the White Tower and Schei Gate, pair it with a perfect day in Sibiu, and if visiting in December, experience one of Romania's most atmospheric Christmas markets under the Gothic spires of the Black Church.

  1. 1

Turul Bastionului Fierarilor – Blacksmiths' Bastion

The Blacksmiths' Bastion—one of the best-preserved of Brașov's medieval guild bastions—anchors the northeastern corner of the old city walls. Its thick limestone walls, built by the blacksmith guild in the 15th century, now house an art gallery and exhibition space. The bastion promenade along the wall exterior—connecting it to the Weavers' Bastion museum—is a tranquil walk away from the main tourist circuit.

  2. 2

Strada Mureșenilor & Brașov's Literary History

The Mureșeni family—publishers of the Gazeta de Transilvania (1838), Romania's first national newspaper—lived on what is now Strada Mureșenilor, near the Black Church. The newspaper, founded in Brașov when it was still part of the Habsburg Empire, championed Romanian national identity and language rights and is seen as a foundational moment of the Romanian national movement.

Hiking the Carpathian Ridges from Brașov

The Carpathian ridge above Brașov is accessible on foot in under an hour from the city centre. The red-triangle trail from the cable car station crosses Tampa (960 m) and continues to Postăvaru (1,799 m) in 4–5 hours. Longer circuits reach Piatra Mare (1,844 m) and Bucegi (2,505 m). Trail markings follow the Romanian system of coloured shapes (red triangle, blue stripe, yellow cross); the Salvamont mountain rescue service operates emergency posts along main routes.

    Postcard Brașov – Photography Spots

The classic Brașov photograph is taken from the White Tower hill above the Black Church—the spires, rooftops, and Tampa mountain in perfect alignment. The cable car summit at sunset offers a different angle; the Schei district gateway (Poarta Schei) with the Black Church framed beyond is the best composition in the old town. In winter, snow on the red-tile rooftops and the illuminated Christmas market create the most beautiful images.

Day Trip to Sibiu – The Perfect Pair

Sibiu (Hermannstadt in German) 130 km west of Brașov by fast road makes the ideal day trip or overnight extension. Its three connected squares—Piața Mare, Piața Mică, and Piața Huet—are lined with 15th–18th century buildings; the cathedral organ is among Central Europe's finest; the ASTRA open-air museum outside the city contains the largest collection of traditional Romanian architecture. Sibiu and Brașov together form the definitive Transylvania visit.

    Christmas Market & Winter Brașov

Brașov's Christmas market—held December 1–26 in Piața Sfatului—is one of Romania's most atmospheric, set against the Gothic backdrop of the Black Church and the medieval council house. The square fills with wooden stalls selling ornaments, chimney cake, mulled wine (vin fiert), and cozonac. The surrounding mountains receive heavy snow from December; with the cobblestones dusted white and the church illuminated, Brașov in December is genuinely magical.
