Johannesburg Lifestyle: Sandton, the South African Braai, Parkhurst, Pilanesberg Safari, and Joburg vs Cape Town

Johannesburg food and lifestyle: Sandton (the richest square mile in Africa), the South African braai culture, the Parkhurst and Melville neighborhood scenes, the Pilanesberg Big Five day trip, Soweto contemporary culture, and the Joburg vs Cape Town debate.

  1. 1

Sandton - The Richest Square Mile in Africa and the Financial Hub

Sandton: the primary commercial and upscale shopping district of Johannesburg, approximately 10 km north of the CBD. The Sandton City mall, the Nelson Mandela Square (with a 6-meter bronze statue of Mandela), and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (the JSE: the largest stock exchange in Africa) are all in Sandton. The headquarters of the major South African banks (Standard Bank, Nedbank, Investec, Absa) are concentrated here. Sandton has the highest concentration of 5-star hotels in sub-Saharan Africa. The Gautrain station at Sandton offers a 15-minute service to OR Tambo International Airport, the most convenient airport transfer in South Africa.

  2. 2

The South African Braai - National Social Institution and Food Culture

The braai (Afrikaans for grilling): the most important social institution in South African culture across all racial groups. More than a cooking method, it is a multi-hour social event. National Heritage Day (24 September) has been informally renamed National Braai Day. The fire is built with hardwood (not charcoal) giving the meat a distinctive smoky flavor; meat is cooked over coals, not flames. The boerewors (the South African farmer sausage: a thick, coiled beef and pork sausage seasoned with coriander and nutmeg), chops (lamb and pork), sosaties (marinated skewered meat from the Cape Malay tradition), and braai bread cooked in cast iron are the primary braai foods. Biltong (air-dried cured beef seasoned with coriander and salt) is the definitive South African snack, consumed year-round.

  3. 3

Parkhurst and Melville - The Joburg Neighborhood Food and Bar Scene

Parkhurst (the 4th Avenue strip): the pavement cafe culture of the Joburg upper middle class. The outdoor tables along 4th Avenue are the primary brunch and people-watching destination. Melville (the bohemian neighborhood adjacent to the University of the Witwatersrand): the 7th Street strip of restaurants, bars, and live music venues, most socially mixed neighborhood in Joburg by race and class. The Joburg specialty coffee scene (the Origin Coffee Roasters and various specialty coffee operations in Maboneng and Parkhurst) has developed into one of the most sophisticated in Africa since 2010.

  4. 4

Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City - The Big Five Day Trip

Pilanesberg National Park (approximately 180 km northwest of Joburg in the North West Province): all five members of the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo) in an ancient volcanic crater landscape. The most accessible Big Five game reserve from Joburg (approximately 2.5-hour drive). Sun City (the entertainment resort adjacent to Pilanesberg, built by Sol Kerzner in 1979 in the Bophuthatswana Bantustan): the casino, two golf courses, and the Valley of Waves water park. The Pilanesberg-Sun City day trip: depart Joburg by 7am, morning game drive, afternoon at Sun City, return by evening.

  5. 5

Soweto Today - The Contemporary Culture and Creative Energy of the Township

Soweto is no longer merely the township of apartheid history: it is a large, complex urban area of approximately 1.5-2 million people with its own economy, culture, and pride. The Orlando Stadium (home of the Soweto Derby: Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs, the most passionate football derby in South Africa). The Vilakazi Street restaurant scene (traditional South African township food: pap en vleis (maize porridge with grilled meat), umngqusho (samp and beans)). The shebeens (informal bars, now legal) are a significant part of the Soweto social scene. Alexandra township (Alex): adjacent to upscale Sandton, separated only by the M1 motorway, the living illustration of South African inequality.

Johannesburg Lifestyle and the Joburg vs Cape Town Debate

Johannesburg vs Cape Town: the defining debate of South African urban identity. Cape Town is the most dramatically beautiful city in Africa (Table Mountain, Atlantic beaches, wine country); Johannesburg is the most economically powerful and culturally vibrant (economic capital, art capital, music capital). The Joburg northern suburbs (Sandton, Rosebank, Parkhurst, Westcliff, Hyde Park) offer a safe, comfortable lifestyle centered on large private houses with pools and gardens. The mall culture: South Africa has more shopping mall floor space per capita than most European countries; the Mall of Africa (the largest mall in Africa) is in Joburg. Recommendation: 4 days Joburg (Soweto, Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Maboneng), then 4 days Cape Town (Table Mountain, Robben Island, Winelands, Cape Peninsula).
