Japanischer Sake, Craft Beer & Suntory Whisky — Osakas Getränkekultur

Osaka's drinks culture (the drinking culture of western Japan's commercial capital, which combines the traditional sake culture of the Nada-Nishinomiya-Itami sake belt (the major sake producing region stretching from Osaka to Kobe), the Suntory whisky culture (the Yamazaki Distillery, the first Japanese whisky distillery, is just 15 minutes from Osaka), and a growing craft beer and craft spirits scene).

  1. 1

    Nada-Gogo — Japan's Sake Capital Near Osaka

Nada-Gogo (Nada and Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, the stretch of coastline between Kobe and Osaka) produces 30% of Japan's sake by volume — the Miyamizu (mineral-rich water from the Rokko Mountains) used in Nada brewing produces the most robust and full-bodied sake style in Japan (Nada sake is called 'man's sake' vs the softer 'woman's sake' of Fushimi/Kyoto); the Sake Museum Hakutsuru (2-2-5 Sumiyoshi Minamimachi, Higashinada, Kobe, free) and Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewing Museum (free) are the two most accessible brewery museums.

  2. 2

Craft Beer Osaka — The Scene Since 2012

Osaka's craft beer scene (developed 2012–2018) concentrates in Namba and Shinsaibashi — Derailleur Brew Works (Namba, 35 rotating taps of Japanese and international craft beer), Sour Bitch Bar (Shinsaibashi, sour beers specialist), and the Craft Beer Market chain (multiple locations, 30+ taps, the most affordable craft beer bar format in Japan) are the key venues; Japanese craft breweries (Minoh Beer, Baeren, Y Market, and Coedo) produce some of the most technically accomplished craft beer in Asia.

  3. 3

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery — Japan's First and Greatest Whisky

The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery (5-2-1 Yamazaki, Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, between Osaka and Kyoto, 30 minutes from Osaka by train, open daily except Tuesdays, free tour, tasting rooms ¥1,500–5,000) is the birthplace of Japanese whisky (founded 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, the Suntory founder) — Yamazaki 12 Year (¥8,500 at the distillery shop) and the extremely rare Yamazaki 25 Year (¥50,000+) are the distillery's benchmarks; the distillery is located at the confluence of three rivers, creating the humidity Torii believed essential for maturation.

  4. 4

Dotonbori Cocktail Bars — Osaka's Night Drinking Culture

The Dotonbori/Namba area (Chuo-ku, Osaka's primary entertainment district, the canal-side street where the Glico Running Man billboard has stood since 1935) contains Osaka's most dense concentration of bars — Bar Nayuta (Namba, intimate 8-seat bar, seasonal cocktails using Japanese ingredients), Bar K (Shinsaibashi, Japanese whisky specialist, over 300 bottles), and the cocktail bars of the Hozenji Yokocho (narrow alley preserved since the 1940s, stone-paved) represent the non-touristy drinking culture; most bars open 7pm–3am.

  5. 5

Minoh Beer — Japan's Most Award-Winning Craft Brewery

Minoh Beer (Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture, founded 1997, winner of multiple World Beer Cup awards) is the most internationally recognized Japanese craft brewery — the founders' daughter Kaori Ohshita (who trained as a brewer in Germany) introduced W-IPA (Imperial IPA, a style rare in Japan) to the Japanese market in 2012; the Minoh Beer restaurant (Ohshita Beer Minoh, Osaka city centre) serves the full range with paired Osaka food (kushikatsu, takoyaki, taiko drumming on Sundays); brewery tours by reservation.

  6. 6

Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki — Osaka's Defining Street Foods

Okonomiyaki (savoury pancake of cabbage, seafood/meat, egg, and batter cooked on a teppan griddle and topped with Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, dried bonito flakes, and nori, ¥800–1,500) and Takoyaki (octopus balls — golf-ball-sized spheres of batter, octopus, pickled ginger, and spring onion, ¥600 for 8) are Osaka's two most iconic foods — the Dotonbori takoyaki stands (Konamon Museum, Kukuru) are the tourist introduction; the local version is at Shogun (Namba) or the Okonomiyaki specialists of Fukushima.
