Tuk Tuk Peninsula Village
Tuk Tuk on Samosir Island is the main tourist hub — the peninsula connected to the main island by a narrow land bridge has developed into a cluster of guesthouses, restaurants, and craft shops serving visitors to Lake Toba, with the red-roofed traditional Batak houses (rumah bolon) visible between the more modern accommodation buildings. The peninsula's position jutting into the caldera lake provides 180-degree water views and has made it the most popular base for exploring Samosir Island's interior villages and cultural sites.

Tomok Stone Age Tombs
Tomok village contains the ancient stone sarcophagi of the Batak kings — the elaborate carved stone tombs dating back several centuries, with their singa lion-face decorations and the effigies of the rulers buried within, represent the pre-Christian animist funerary tradition of the Toba Batak before Christian missionaries arrived in the 19th century. The tombs are maintained as sacred sites, and the stone museum-village of Tomok is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Sumatra.

Ambarita King's Stone Court
Ambarita village has one of Lake Toba's most unusual historical sites — the stone chairs, tables, and execution block where the village chief Siallagan held court and administered justice in the pre-colonial era are preserved in a compound shaded by old trees. The stone furniture represents the public governance infrastructure of Batak village society, and the execution site (where enemies and criminals were reportedly executed and consumed in ritual practices) is a reminder of the pre-missionary Batak culture that the German Lutheran missionaries dramatically transformed in the 19th century.

Simanindo Traditional Dance
Simanindo at the northern tip of Samosir Island has the most complete traditional Batak longhouse complex open to visitors — the large rumah bolon (great house) with its elaborately carved and painted facade, the museum of Batak cultural artefacts inside, and the traditional Batak sigale-gale puppet dance performances held daily demonstrate the artistic traditions of the Toba Batak people. The sigale-gale dance, in which a carved wooden puppet is made to dance in ceremonies originally intended to comfort the bereaved, is one of the most distinctive performing art traditions in Sumatra.

Huta Bolon Village Architecture
The huta (traditional Batak village) layout visible in several Samosir villages follows a consistent pattern established by Batak customary law — the two rows of rumah bolon (great houses) facing each other across a communal space, with the sopo (rice barn) facing each house, creates a settlement pattern that expresses the clan-based social organisation of Batak communities. The dramatic boat-shaped rooflines of the traditional houses, curving up dramatically at each end, and the elaborate carved and painted facades in red, black, and white with clan-specific motifs make Batak village architecture one of the most distinctive building traditions in Southeast Asia.

Lake Toba Caldera Views
Standing on the high ground of Samosir Island and looking across Lake Toba reveals the true scale of the Toba supervolcano caldera — the lake stretches 100km in length and 30km in width, with the caldera walls rising 300-900m above the water level on all sides. The island on which you stand is itself the resurgent dome of the volcano, pushed up by magmatic pressure after the catastrophic eruption 74,000 years ago that created the depression now filled by the world's largest volcanic lake. The scale of this natural landscape is comprehensible only from the high vantage points of the island or caldera rim.
