The shores of the Tuk Tuk peninsula on Samosir Island have the most accessible swimming in Lake Toba — the clear, cool volcanic water at around 22-26°C, the rocky and sandy shoreline accessible from the guesthouses and hotels of the tourist peninsula, and the extraordinary backdrop of the caldera walls rising around the lake create a swimming environment without parallel in Indonesian freshwater lakes. The water's clarity (visibility of several metres) and the absence of marine stingers or dangerous wildlife make it ideal for extended swimming.

Batu Gantung Rock Formation
Batu Gantung (Hanging Rock) on the caldera wall above Parapat is a geological feature associated with a Batak legend — the large rock formation protruding from the cliff face above the lake is explained in local mythology as the petrified figure of a young woman, and the formation's unusual appearance against the caldera wall makes it one of the lake's most photographed features from the water. Boat trips from Parapat or Tuk Tuk pass close to the formation, providing a water-level perspective on the caldera wall geology.
