Rainbow Mountain's extraordinary color comes from different mineral compositions in the rock layers - red from iron oxide (goethite), yellow from iron sulphide (limonite), white from quartz sandstone, green from chlorite and purple/red from manganese oxide; each color band represents a different geological era
